Client - Sense it out technologies

Product

Precision farming is a widely practiced form of smart agriculture using IoT.

This method of farming relies on data and analytics extracted from IoT sensors and devices that are placed on farm equipment and surveillance devices used in the process.

Sense it our technologies launched an IOT sensor named SICCA which is an indigenously developed sensor technology that makes irrigation management smarter.

Requirement

The client wanted a mobile app that could capture all the sensor data from their hardware and project it in a manner that is easy for the farmers to understand. The app should give suggestions to the farmer based on his crop type and the farming cycle.

The ground sensors and controllers are automated and this data should be fetched by the app through cloud and relayed to the farmer via notifications and alerts. Example: water released by pump, power failure, water requirement ended etc.

The app should be able to control the hardware on ground in real time with minimum delay. Recording and analysis of data to be made simpler in an automated fashion that could be assessed easily.

Challenges

Understanding the Indian farmer mindset and their way of interacting with mobile applications.

There was loads of data to be projected on the app.

The interface was to be made in a way where the farmer can make changes easily but at the same time he should be made aware that any changes made in the app will change the water flow in real time on his farm.

Resolution
  • We observed the farmers, interacted with them and got insights that they are pretty familiar with mobile applications but aren’t very savvy while using the swipe features.

  • We used pop-up warning notifications when the farmer would try to go overboard with making changes manually, reducing the chance of mistakenly changing the settings.

  • Color and visibility of text was kept in balance from the start..

Result
  • The app was launched as a pilot test along with the hardware and the farmers on ground really liked the app especially the and have been using it regularly.

  • The data is collected on the cloud and it sends them regular notifications about the health of their farm. Apart from this they could even control the water requirements in real time through the app.
